Multiple-conclusion Rules, Hypersequents Syntax and Step Frames
We investigate proof theoretic properties of logical systems via algebraic methods. We introduce a calculus for deriving multipleconclusion rules and show that it is a Hilbert style counterpart of hypersequent calculi. Using step-algebras we develop a criterion establishing the bounded proof property and finite model property for these systems. Finally, we show how this criterion can be applied...
متن کاملModels, Rules, and Deductive Reasoning
We formulate a simple theory of deductive reasoning based on mental models. One prediction of the theory is experimentally tested and found to be incorrect. The bearing of our results on contemporary theories of mental models is discussed. We then consider a potential objection to current rule-theories of deduction. Such theories picture deductive reasoning as the successive application of infe...
متن کاملA Multiple-Conclusion Meta-Logic
The theory of cut-free sequent proofs has been used to motivate and justify the design of a number of logic programming languages. Two such languages, λProlog and its linear logic refinement, Lolli [12], provide for various forms of abstraction (modules, abstract data types, higher-order programming) but lack primitives for concurrency. The logic programming language, LO (Linear Objects) [2] pr...
متن کاملDeductive Parsing with Multiple Levels of Representation
This paper discusses a sequence of deductive parsers, called PAD1 PAD5, that utilize an ax iomat iza t ion of the pr inciples and parameters of GB theory, including a restricted transformational component (Move-a). PAD2 uses an inference control strategy based on the "freeze" predicate of Prolog-II, while PAD3 5 utilize the Unfold-Fold transformation to transform the original axiomatization int...
متن کاملProbabilistic Reasoning With Facts And Rules In Deductive Databases
In this paper we present a new method for probabilistic reasoning with true facts and uncertain rules within a deductive database. Besides a cautious approach to inferences on uncertain rules, we show a default approach for uncertainty reasoning including factual knowledge, based on the ideas of maximal context and detachment. Integrated into a database these approaches support many important a...
